Research Interests Numerical Optimization / Ship design. Simulation-Based Design for ships and for complex coupled systems (Multi-disciplinary Design Optimization). Variable-fidelity model management for systems governed by partial differential equations. Mathematical theory for Global Optimization methods. Evolutionary and partitioning algorithms for Single and Multi-objective problems in ship design. Wave Breaking and Vorticity Dynamics. Direct Numerical Simulation of breaking waves solving the Navier-Stokes eqs coupled with surface capturing approaches (two phase Level-Set technique) to follow the air-water interface. Surface tension effects in the generation of breaking waves (microbreakers). Vorticity – free surface interactions. Planar water jets impacting on calm water. Drag reduction with microbubbles. Air microbubbles injected into the turbulent boundary layer on the side and keel of the ship may reduce the turbulence intensity thus decreasing the skin friction significantly. This topic looks attractive for commercial and strategic applications in Naval Hydrodynamics, where techniques to realize significant skin friction reduction are regarded as fundamental not only for low speed large carriers but also for very high-speed ships. The research activity just started one year ago. Extreme motions and capsize. Validation of URANS codes by comparison with experimental results obtained by properly designed experiments including uncertainty. Study of the extreme ship motions aimed at both fundamental physical understanding and at collecting high-quality data useful for CFD code validation. Parametric roll studies. |
