The Italian Ship Model Basin (INSEAN) is a research institution with expertise in the field of naval and marine hydrodynamics. It was founded in 1927, and it is located in south west suburb of Rome. INSEAN is a research establishment sponsored by the Italian Government, and it is currently under the supervision of the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport. The institutional tasks of INSEAN were set forth on 1946 by a specific law (which also conferred upon it the name Istituto Nazionale per Studi ed Esperienze di Architettura Navale), and successively integrated by the Italian Government in 1999, are as follows: Since 1984 INSEAN has been increasingly involved in research activities, in the framework of specific initiatives supported by the Italian Government (INSEAN Research Programmes 1984-85, 1986, 1988-90 and, successively, INSEAN Research Programmes 1991-93, 1994-97, 1997-2000). Since 1990, theoretical and numerical research has further developed, leading INSEAN to be acknowledged worldwide as a prominent research institution in the field of naval hydrodynamics.
